The Hurricane Restaurants Almanac
A Little History (or as mama used to say. "Explain Yourself!")

The MacDonalds
Brooks and Luanne MacDonald

Hurricane started at its Perkins Cove location on June 24, 1991, with its purchase by Brooks and Luanne MacDonald. With the acquisition, "Brookie" and "Lu" brought a new commitment to the finest food, beverage and service in the area.

The MacDonalds had years of restaurant experience behind them. Having attended the Culinary Institute of America, Brooks served as chef at the Cliff House in Ogunquit, Maine, and at the Eastern Slope Inn in North Conway, New Hampshire, before becoming executive chef for Great Restaurants in Great Towns (the parent company of the Horsefeathers family of restaurants in northern New England). Brookie is also the co-author of "Lobster Tales," the definitive book of lobster lore and recipes.

Lu's expertise was more the front-of-the-house. She worked at the Ferry Landing Restaurant, was dining room ambassador for TGI Friday's and dining room manager for the Dolphin Striker in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Together - along with their professional staff - they have garnered some impressive accolades over the years, including:

• A five-star rating from the Portland Press Herald
• A four-star rating from The Lowell Sun
• Three "Wine-List Awards" from Restaurant Hospitality Magazine
• A "Best Short-List Award" from the Wine Enthusiast
• "Award of Excellence" from the Wine Spectator for eight consecutive years
• A cover story in Down East magazine
• AAA "Three-Diamond Award" for eight years running
• "Highly Recommended" by "Fodor's Travel Guide."

Hurricane Restaurant has also been the recipient of enthusiastic reviews by Yankee Magazine, The Boston Globe, Yankee Traveler, The Journal Tribune and the eclectic book, "The Best Places to Kiss."

In the spring of 2001, Brooks and Lu opened the current Hurricane Restaurant on Dock Square in Kennebunkport. Restaurants have been on this site since the late 1800s. Prior to Hurricane, Pat Lyna owned, operated and lovingly cared for the Riverview Restaurant there for over 50 years. Brooks has been a Riverview patron since the mid-'60s. In fact, it may have been Pat's restaurant that steered him into this business all those years ago.

The restaurant has been meticulously taken care of over the last 100-plus years and is in a location considered to be one of the most beautiful settings on the coast of Maine. It features water views from all its tables and a high-volume of foot traffic out the front door. Plus, there is a large parking lot out the rear door!

Lunch and dinner are served seven days a week, almost year 'round and the restaurant seats about 90 people. The menu features lots of fresh seafood and signature dishes developed by Hurricane chefs over the years. Pastries and chocolates are made in-house by our tout sweet pastry chef. The handcrafted mahogany bar is stocked with the finest wines and liquors available.

In 2003, Brooks and Lu began their latest hospitality adventure with the opening of the Port Bakery & Café by Hurricane, on the Port Road in Kennebunk's Lower Village. You can now enjoy the same pastries and breads featured in Hurricane restaurants. The Cafˇ menu features assorted coffees, teas, cappuccinos, fresh juices and smoothies, a hot breakfast menu, bagels and breakfast sandwiches, daily soup creations, crisp salads and made-to-order lunch sandwiches, prepared on freshly baked artisan breads. For your take-home pleasure, our deli cases are filled with many of the same menu items found at Hurricane. Home entertaining has never been easier. Follow your nose to the aroma of fresh-ground coffee, freshly baked bread and sweet-smelling pastries. Enjoy your order to go, linger in our cafe or bask in our outdoor seating on a lovely landscaped deck. Port Bakery & Cafe« is open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week, year 'round.

Of all the hard things we do in life, saying goodbye may be the hardest. So, it is with great regret and a maelstrom of mixed emotions that after 14 wonderful seasons we had to say goodbye to the many, many good friends, staff, vendors and especially the wonderful customers of the Hurricane Restaurant in Perkins Cove, Ogunquit in the spring of 2005. Due to unsuccessful lease renewal negotiations, Hurricane no longer operates a restaurant in Perkins Cove. We wish to thank all of our Ogunquit friends, staff, vendors and customers for so many memorable years of heart-felt hospitality, conviviality and fun. It has truly been an experience we will always treasure. We hope you will continue these traditions and join us at our Hurricane Restaurant in Dock Square, Kennebunkport and the Port Bakery by Hurricane in Kennebunk's Lower Village - both open for business as usual.

The MacDonalds are extremely proud of the accomplishments they've made thus far. They are constantly searching for new talent and raising their expectations to let that talent shine. As for the future? Their intent is more of the same: to add to the accolades they have received and share them with the people who help gain them. And golf. Definitely more golf.
